Spa-Francorchamps – Beim Sechsstundenrennen auf dem Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps hat das Team Abu Dhabi Proton Racing eine Podiumsplatzierung nur knapp verpasst. Mit dem 470 PS starken Porsche 911 RSR belegten Klaus Bachler (Österreich), Christian Ried (Schönebürg) und Khaled Al Qubaisi (Abu Dhabi) im turbulenten zweiten Lauf der Sportwagen-Weltmeisterschaft WEC den vierten Platz in der Klasse GTE-Am. Im Porsche 911 RSR von Dempsey Proton Racing kam der US-Rennfahrer und Hollywoodstar Patrick Dempsey zusammen mit Patrick Long (USA) und Marco Seefried (Wildschönau) als Fünfter ins Ziel. Das Rennen auf dem 7,004 Kilometer langen Traditionskurs in den Ardennen gilt als Generalprobe für die 24 Stunden von Le Mans am 13./14. Juni.

Stimmen nach dem Rennen
Christian Ried, Teammanager und Fahrer: „Auch wenn im Rennen nicht alles nach Plan gelaufen ist, sind wir im Hinblick auf Le Mans doch einen wichtigen Schritt weiter. Wir bringen alle Voraussetzungen mit, um an der Spitze mitzufahren, das haben wir im Qualifying und über weite Strecken auch im Rennen gezeigt. Schade, dass wir die Chance auf ein Podium, die wir auch heute durchaus hatten, nicht nutzen konnten. Doch bei dieser starken Konkurrenz muss wirklich alles passen, um so ein turbulentes Rennen, noch dazu auf einer Strecke wie Spa, gut und sicher nach Hause zu bringen. Wir wissen, woran wir noch arbeiten müssen. Unser großes Ziel ist Le Mans. Die Vorbereitung auf das wichtigste Rennen des Jahres hat längst begonnen. Ab sofort schalten wir einen Gang höher.“
Patrick Dempsey (Porsche 911 RSR #77, Dempsey Proton Racing): „Mein erstes Rennen auf dieser sehr selektiven Strecke war eine großartige Erfahrung. Meine Teamkollegen haben mir von Spa vorgeschwärmt, doch meine Erwartungen wurden weit übertroffen. Wir hatten ein problemloses Qualifying und im Rennen hatte unser 911 RSR einen guten Speed. Ich habe versucht, möglichst keine Fehler zu machen, was mir auch ganz gut gelungen ist. Alles in allem war das eine sehr positive Erfahrung für das Team. Jetzt freuen wir uns auf Le Mans.“
Klaus Bachler (Porsche 911 RSR #88, Abu Dhabi Proton Racing): „Ich hatte einen sehr guten Start, bin von drei auf zwei nach vorne gefahren. Nach der ersten Rennstunde lagen wir noch auf Podiumskurs, doch dann haben uns einige Zwischenfälle zurück geworfen. Es gab verschiedene Kontakte mit Konkurrenten, aus denen unser 911 RSR leider nicht ganz unbeschadet hervor ging. Unser Team hat uns aber mit tollen Boxenstopps geholfen, so dass wir am Ende noch Vierter werden konnten. Schade, da wäre heute sicherlich eine bessere Platzierung drin gewesen.“

Als nächstes Rennen in der Sportwagen-Weltmeisterschaft WEC bestreiten Dempsey Proton Racing und Abu Dhabi Proton Racing am 13./14. Juni den 24-Stunden-Klassiker in Le Mans.

Die Serie
In der Sportwagen-Weltmeisterschaft WEC (World Endurance Championship) werden in dieser Saison acht Rennen auf drei Kontinenten ausgetragen. Sportprototypen und GT-Fahrzeuge starten dabei in vier Klassen: LMP1, LMP2, GTE-Pro und GTE-Am. Sie fahren gemeinsam in einem Rennen, werden aber getrennt gewertet. Die Porsche-Kundenteams Dempsey Proton Racing und Abu Dhabi Proton Racing treten mit dem Porsche 911 RSR in der stark besetzten Klasse GTE-Am gegen Aston Martin, Chevrolet und Ferrari an.

“We are one important step further”

Spa-Francorchamps – In the six hours race on the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, the Abu Dhabi Proton Racing team only closely missed out on a place on the podium. With the Porsche 911 RSR with 470 PS, Klaus Bachler (Austria), Christian Ried (Schönebürg) and Khaled Al Qubaisi (Abu Dhabi) came fourth in the GTE-Am class in the turbulent second run of the Sports Car World Endurance Championship (WEC). In the Porsche 911 RSR of Dempsey Proton Racing, the US race driver and Hollywood star Patrick Dempsey ranked fifth together with Patrick Long (USA) and Marco Seefried (Wildschönau). The race on the 7.004 km long traditional course in the Ardennes is said to be the final rehearsal for the 24 Hours of Le Mans on June 13/14.

Comments after the race
Christian Ried, team manager and driver: “Even though not everything went according to the plan during the race, we still are one important step further with regard to Le Mans. We have all the requirements to drive far up the field, which we have shown during the qualifying and for the most part also during the race. What a pity that we were not able to seize the opportunity for a podium place, which we definitely had today as well. But with this strong competition, everything has to be right to take such a turbulent race home well and safely, especially on a circuit like Spa. We know what we still have to work on. Our big goal is Le Mans. Preparations for the most important race of the year have already started. From now on, we will speed up.”
    
Patrick Dempsey (Porsche 911 RSR #77, Dempsey Proton Racing): “My first race on this very selective circuit was an amazing experience. My teammates raved about Spa, but my expectations were surpassed by far. We had a qualifying without any problems, and during the race, our 911 RSR had a good speed. I tried not to make any mistakes, which worked out quite well. All in all it was a very positive experience for the whole team. We are now looking forward to Le Mans.”

Klaus Bachler (Porsche 911 RSR #88, Abu Dhabi Proton Racing): “I had a very good start and drove from three to two. After the first hour of the race, we were heading for the podium, but then some incidents set us back. We had various contacts with our competitors from which our 911 RSR unfortunately didn’t come out entirely undamaged. But our team helped us with great pit stops, and that’s why we came fourth in the end. It’s a pity, today we could have reached a better placement for sure.”

As their next race in the Sports Car World Endurance Championship WEC, Dempsey Proton Racing and Abu Dhabi Proton Racing will compete in the 24 hours race of Le Mans on June 13/14.

The series
At the Sports Car World Endurance Championship (WEC), eight races on three continents will be held in the current season. Sports prototypes and GT cars will start in four classes: LMP1, LMP2, GTE-Pro and GTE-Am. They will all drive together in one race, but will be rated separately. Porsche’s client teams Dempsey Proton Racing and Abu Dhabi Proton Racing will compete against Aston Martin, Chevrolet and Ferrari with the Porsche 911 RSR in the strong GTE-Am class.
